These are two suggestions from old-school herbal medicine that I have seen help
1. Tighten up the floppy bits.
Snoring happens because the soft palate, the ‘uvula’ flaps around like a flag in the wind and so makes a sound that, in the middle of the deep dark night, sounds 100 times worse than it would in the daylight. There are some remarkably effective herbs at helping strengthen weakened tissues that should definitely be put to the test on this. They are the ‘astringents’ and they work by a direct effect of ‘tightening up the floppy bits’.
That is the good news, the bad news is that they are somewhat challenging to take so you have to really love your partner to even consider commencing this. There’s no point just doing it once and stopping there because you didn’t like it, this is a treatment that may genuinely help but, depending on all kinds of factors, it might take a good few sessions before you are greeted with a radiantly well-slept mate in the morning. |
Two of the best astringents are also two of the easiest to find (or even grow) herbs; Raspberry leaf and Sage leaf. You can use either, or both, according to your preference. The method of making this is simplicity itself. Take 2 full tsps. of the dried herbs, place them in a cup of boiling water for 10-15 minutes, strain and drink -- slowly!
Technique: You have to get these herbs to where they need to go. Your throat is all a system of inter-connecting parts so any of it that you ‘tone’ will help every other part and the more of your throat you get in touch with the herbs the more it can respond to the treatment.
Gargle, and swallow. Gargle, and swallow. Keep taking mouthfuls of the tea, swilling, gargling and slowly swallowing it until the cup is empty. You could make your partner stand and watch you so that they graphically understood that this is just how much you love them and are prepared to sacrifice for their happiness and health. I am possibly making it out to be a little worse than it really is but I wouldn’t suggest this is something you would do for fun... (by the way the reason you swallow the astringents is to get their internal benefits as well as their direct action from contact with the tissues)
Length of Treatment: Assuming this treatment helps -- it's interesting to see what happens when you stop it --how it appears to be able to affect a lasting benefit...
If you give say, a week, to doing the tea every day for 7 nights (sometime in the evening would be the logical time to do it) and you improve your snoring to a significant degree that is noticeable by your partner then it is very interesting how people I have used this strategy with report that the benefits seem to last long after they finished their treatment. It appears that the tissues that have been lax are able to be toned up and can stay that way for at least a good while...
2. Put a cork in it.
The other old-school treatment is to sew a cork into the back of your pyjamas to stop you sleeping on your back.
