 The Long Sleep

It’s said that death and taxes are the only truly certainties in life.
Taxes aren’t certain, they get dodged
plus some people get too rich to pay them
but death is certainly certain
that which the all-dead Romans called ‘the long sleep’
sleep is strange when you think about it, where it ends up

1) everything alive has to sleep, or it will soon die
2) everything alive, eventually, stops waking up

how remarkable it is that all of us,
every single living thing that ever was
falls asleep, again and again,
multiple dress-rehearsals,
and that we love it
that we can
and do.
