if you were a beam of light
a particle perhaps, or a wave, a photon
look, it doesn’t matter
just be a beam for a moment, okay?
imagine you were hurtling along
as fast as you could go
and ahead of you was utterly empty space
it was new, unpopulated
no light, sound, matter or being
had ever before gone into what lay ahead

Imagine that
some would say it would be terrifying, I would
but so exciting too
and perversely, this always makes me think of love
why perversely?
surely utterly empty space is all that is the opposite of love

and what if you knew, you really knew
that every beam before, was behind you now
and would be for ever-more
wouldn’t it be, as opposing to nature
to say, “abandon all comfort”
to which, in response, you would grab
the nearest and strongest tether to your life you could find?

its too late, little light
you’ve passed the point of comfort
let alone being able
to turn back
